Rotator Cuff

Rotator Cuff

A common cause of shoulder pain is injury to the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles that help us move and stabilize our arm. The injury to the rotator cuff can include tearing and damage to any or all of the muscles supporting the joint. People involved in performing repetitive lifting or overhead activities are considered at high risk for acquiring this injury. Athletes are especially vulnerable, particularly tennis players, baseball pitchers and in professional swimmers. Although this injury is caused by sports activity or overhead work, in young adults this can occur due to traumatic incidents such as a fall. Some common symptoms may include swelling, sharp pain and decreased range of motion of the muscle. For more information on rotator cuff injuries, click here.
